ABSTRACT
This chapter presents German-English literary translingualism from the medieval era to the present. It proposes several categories for analyzing this multifaceted phenomenon: Early German-English translingualism, reader-oriented language choice, forced language change in exile, and creative experiments with the second language. The chapter gives several examples of writers for each category and analyzes both their work and their language choice in the relevant socio-political context.
