ABSTRACT

If the purpose of teaching about war is to understand the past in order to prevent repetition in the future, the purpose of teaching peace is to create that future. Popoki, a cat with a rainbow tail, is the symbol and energy behind the Popoki Peace Project. The work of the Popoki Peace The Popoki Peace Project emphasizes bodies, stories, and art-making in activities that generally have a theme or focus such as peace or human rights. Popoki understands security to mean both the physicality of being safe but also the feeling of being safe. Most of Popoki’s activities that focus on drawing are group activities. Popoki works on an everyday basis with young people who are struggling to find their place in a violent and confusing world. Popoki is not always successful. Popoki has become an indispensable part of author teaching, learning, and activism, partly because he reminds author to look for hidden rainbows.
