ABSTRACT

Any reflections on teaching peace and war will invariably be shaped by the context in which such teaching occurs, by the teacher, and by a vision of world that such teaching seeks to promote. During the 1980s, the author joined his university, located in a province gripped by a deadly civil conflict. The author approach to teaching is guided by critical theory, transformative learning theory, and the inclusion of African perspectives and practices of peacebuilding. Educators need to learn practical conflict resolution skills that they can practice in their lives and develop in their learners. Violence is dehumanizing for perpetrators, victims, and society at large. Endemic violence as experienced in South Africa erodes hope, agency, and belief in humanity. Video and Internet-based technology provides another means to showcase peacebuilding perspectives and practices from Africa, and to link local and global struggles.
