ABSTRACT

Many people are loath to bring up the topic of hygiene and grooming, though Mary J. Wrobel is not one of them! Wrobel sets a positive tone for this chapter, forthrightly discussing the importance of hygiene and grooming, and giving tips for both the therapist and clients.

Wrobel indicates that as a therapist it is imperative to understand why your client struggles with hygiene: they might be unaware of the impact on themselves and others, they may be anxious or depressed, or they may be resistant to changes. Wrobel suggests that identifying hygiene concerns is linked to meeting other life goals, such as landing a job or dating. She suggests that clients develop a hygiene routine, and provides a variety of helpful handouts to support that goal.
