ABSTRACT

Air cargo carriers transport high-value and time-sensitive shipments over longer-haul routes. Compared to surface-mode competitors, air cargo carriers provide fast and reliable delivery times, allowing shippers to reduce inventory investments, increase on-time service, and meet demand for fast-changing markets, such as the fashion industry. Integrators provide door-to-door service, mainly for package deliveries, all-cargo operators provide heavy-lift capabilities, while the passenger-cargo combination carriers use their extensive route networks to provide shipment services around the world. The growth in internet commerce and the expansion of global trade have increased the market for speedy deliveries via air freight. Moreover, new technologies, such as drone deliveries, aim to continue the expansion of air freight services. However, challenges remain, including growing calls for a reduction in the environmental footprint of the industry.
