ABSTRACT

Managing the environmental impacts of air transport operations represents one of the key challenges facing the commercial aviation industry. This chapter identifies the principal sources and types of pollutants and then discusses their resulting environmental impacts in terms of climate change, local air quality, noise, and energy, water and waste. A range of measures that seek to mitigate these impacts are then described and discussed. Case study examples are used to illustrate key points. The chapter concludes by exploring the impact of climate change on aviation and the adaptation measures the industry may need to adopt.
