ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to identify the principles and practices of airport management and to understand the different metrics or standards of measurement that can be used to assess airport performance. The chapter begins by considering the contemporary operating environment for airports. This is followed by an examination of the key performance areas of airfield operations, financial management and service quality. Two major issues for many airport operators, the management of scarce runway capacity and surface access, are then discussed. The chapter concludes by assessing future challenges for airport management and performance, with a particular focus on technological opportunities.
