ABSTRACT

The term animation art encompasses a wide range of artwork that is created for the production of animated films as well as related art designed expressly for sale. Animation teams then create the drawings from which the cels are traced and painted. The increased demand for animation art is being met by the creation of non-production art. For both animation art and fine art, the value attributed to scarcity is double-edged; it must be coupled with reputation to contribute to an artwork's stature. Fine artists produce finished works that are meant for display and consumption. In contrast, the most valuable animation art being sold is that which was meant to be a miniscule portion of a much larger work, the film itself. The practice of animation art dealers is fundamentally different because their clientele has a general knowledge of the cartoons and characters that are represented in the artworks.
