ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the consequences of the war, the social psychological, and the effect it had upon a group of young Arabs in Lebanon and their perceptions of themselves. It examines the impact of the war upon a select group of Arab youth, Arab students at the American University of Beirut, and the ways in which it affected their attitudes or images that they hold of themselves. The Arab-Israeli conflict of October 1973 had a great impact on the lives of millions. If the war had a significant effect upon the self conceptions of Arab students, it was hypothesized that the change would produce: more positive self descriptions and less negative self descriptions. Many appreciate the link between larger political events and the attitudes of those involved regarding themselves and others, but such dynamics are poorly understood and have been seldom systematically studied during actual political conflicts.
