ABSTRACT

Peace education is in the early and groping stage of its development. There is as yet no commonly agreed-on conceptual framework, philosophy, or definition of the field. Peace scholars distinguish peace into negative peace and positive peace. Negative peace refers to the absence of armed conflict or physical violence. Positive peace refers to conditions of economic well-being and social justice and participation being realized such that the root causes of conflict are diminished. Human activities are changing the climate, with far-reaching implications for food production. A United Nations Environment Programme study points to the dangers inherent in loss of our forests: Forests cover some third of the world’s land area. The myth of separation and dominance over Earth paved the way for other dualities and splits in human consciousness, other expressions of dominance: the domination of the masculine over the feminine; the domination of class over class, race over race, religion over religion, nation over nation.
