ABSTRACT

Since the 1960s, when most African countries became formally independent, has there been so much danger to their existence as sovereign states. The Declaration of 1986 as International Year of Peace by the United Nations created a new awareness about world peace in Africa. The aggravation of world tensions caused by imperialism in the 1980s did not bypass Africa. Although approximately 30 African states bad signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty, countries of the continent were showing little concern over the arms race. The arms race is a global problem since it affects the social activity of all nations, their economies, inter-nation ties, regional peace and international peace co-existence. The Third World nations really have no alternative but organized unity in their determination to rid themselves of the tag of under-development and exploitation. Education has a very important role to play in the development of peace processes in Africa.
