ABSTRACT

Farooq Abdullah's government, which had a massive majority in the assembly, was dismissed for reasons that had nothing to do with the governance of the state, political or economic. The dismissal of the government sent signals to the people of Kashmir that any honest decision that they may take in regard to the governance of the State could easily be set aside by the powers that be in Delhi. When Farooq signed an accord with the Congress, the Kashmiris experienced a tremendous sense of betrayal, a betrayal that was expected by them. The Kashmiris feel that not only would Delhi get rid of the government as it did in the case of Farooq, and would impose itself as it did through the accord, but would prevent for all times any expression of the people's will through fair and objective elections.
