ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews a specific example of how a small library consortium and one library in the consortium have attempted to estimate the demand for computing for a special project. The state of Colorado has neither a large population nor an abundance of libraries. The population is estimated at 2,730,000. There are a total of 1,828 libraries in the state: 42 academic, 123 public, 1,450 school, and 213 special. Only three libraries hold more than a million volumes each: the University of Colorado, Boulder; the Denver Public Library; and Colorado State University, Fort Collins. Five of the general research libraries formed what came to be called Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries. The libraries at the University of Colorado, Boulder, consist of a main library and seven branch libraries: Art and Architecture, Business, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Math-Physics, Music, and Law.
