ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some basic information on the role of scientific and technological information in the development process. Scientific and technological information in the development process was a central concern of the United Nations Conference on Technology for Development, held in Vienna in August, 1979. According to the Committee, "Such a global network was meant as a means of strengthening the existing system and services, at all levels, and of providing, through a shared knowledge of the operations of all participating organizations and institutions, the means for their intercommunication and linkage." A proposal is being prepared to establish an international clearinghouse on microcomputer hardware and software systems, online information-retrieval systems, and associated telecommunication technologies for developing countries.
