ABSTRACT

Microcomputers are now flooding the market at a phenomenal rate. Computer professionals, as well as other investors, are setting up computer businesses. At least two companies have shown keen interest in assembling microcomputers for marketing in Nigeria. In Nigeria, various types of microcomputer hardware are represented within the public and private sectors. The IBM and WANG series are favored in Ghana, Gambia, and Liberia. The affordability of microcomputers for many universities and research institutes in West Africa has increased the research output of the academic staff. A major barrier in West Africa today is the lack of maintenance support for computers. Another notable barrier is the lack of high-calibre personnel with a sufficiently well-rooted and broad-based appreciation of microcomputing. The Nigerian government recently set up the National Committee on Computer Education, and its publicized determination to introduce microcomputing into schools will result in the broader use of microcomputers in the country.
