ABSTRACT

Isabel Donoso has worked closely with the Vicariate of Solidarity for a number of years. In this chapter; she does not catalog the abuses the poor have endured, which have been adequately reported elsewhere. Instead, she is concerned with the ways they have organized to protect themselves and to prevent persecution and suffering. What follows is a description and analysis of these forms of organization. Donoso is particularly interested in certain fundamental principles that have characterized these human rights * initiatives and that shed light on the phenomenon of popular culture itself
