ABSTRACT

The countries of South-eastern Europe occupy the broad peninsula that stretches south-eastward from the main body of Europe into the Mediterranean Sea between the Adriatic and Black Seas. The states that form South-eastern Europe are Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, and Turkey. Albania is the least urbanized country in South-eastern Europe. Turkey presents the same general demographic characteristics as Albania. Although the pattern of migrations in Turkey is exceedingly complicated, partly because of seasonal migrations, the basic patterns are clear. Like Turkey, Yugoslavia has experienced the migration of workers, at times over a million, to Western Europe, especially West Germany. The money being sent back to Yugoslavia is already having an economic effect, but it is not yet certain what the full demographic effect may be. The basic demographic structure of Romania is very similar to that of Yugoslavia.
