ABSTRACT

The proliferation of newsletters has resulted in increased dissemination of specialized news about Quebec. The tone of the letter varies under different editors, but by and large it is determined to squeeze in every positive-sounding economic development, no matter how far-fetched, and to omit everything else, no matter how important. The gentle treatment on the travel page is the other side of the undercoverage coin, for if more were to be made of Quebec's turbulent politics and innovative economics, the travel editors would quickly be disenchanted. Many newspapers and radio and television stations in the United States depend on The Associated Press and United Press International for their foreign news, including news of Canada and Quebec. The harshness among business publications should be seen in the light of their responsibilities to the readership. The caricatures exist because of television's preference for confrontation, preferably of a violent nature.
