ABSTRACT
Most of the research conducted on "Third World women" was of external origin. Women scholars from abroad working on women's issues or projects designed from a feminist/woman-centered perspective are welcomed to continue their research in the region. However, more than ever before, visiting researchers are asked to share information and resources with Caribbean host institutions or groups with whom they are working. This chapter aims to provide a small sampling of the groups engaged in the self-determined women and development process in the Commonwealth Caribbean and review some of the most significant research they have produced. Indeed, some of the projects were instrumental in reshaping and defining the way many groups in the Caribbean formulate and promote their own agenda for research, scholarship, and development projects. The Women and Development Studies group's impact and the works of influential women scholars have broadened research, teaching, and scholarship at the University of the West Indies and affiliated institutions.
