ABSTRACT

Feminism is both an intellectual-moral perspective and a sociopolitical movement. A focus on feminism as a moral-intellectual movement indicates that the social changes feminists seek involve aspects of culture and thought that are absolutely central to the social, political, and economic organization of societies. Feminists' political and social strategies, especially at a global level, may appear to have limited reformist aims. The new feminist challenges to knowledge reflect the larger feminist movement. Feminist scholars in all academic disciplines began the search for knowledge about women. Women's studies programs and courses are an essential foundation for the advancement of feminist scholarship. Trained in the tradition of social science inquiry, feminists typically began their work using the discipline's tools to study women's roles in society and topics specifically pertinent to women. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
