ABSTRACT

All assistance agencies state then commitment to developmental principles. Fewer have systematically translated these principles into policies which govern all aspects of their work. This chapter examines policy options and illustrated effective practice in the sections that have gone before. It offers additional insights—this time from the perspective of nongovernmental organization (NGO) management. All agencies express through their own publications their commitment to developmental principles. From International Relief/Development Project (IRDP), however, the chapter suggests that several basic principles that should be adopted by all agencies concerned with integrating relief and development. Development work should be concerned xmth long-term sustainability. Thus, every development program and project should anticipate and be designed to prevent or mitigate disasters. One mechanism that several agencies in the IRDP study used was that of orientation/training. Most Northern NGOs train expatriate staff before sending them to the field.
