ABSTRACT

Rock music in Ukraine has experienced several waves since its first appearance in the 1960s. According to rock musician and rock historian Kyrylo Stetsenko, the majority of the Ukrainian rock groups not only sang in English but copied English and American musicians, thereby mastering the new musical language and performance style. In the wake of the invasion, Ukrainian authorities clamped down on local rock musicians, prohibiting the use of English in performances and any imitation of Western fashions. Many songs at the festival were about the second-class status of the Ukrainian language. The Ukrainian-language column "Fonohraf" in Moloda Gvardia reflects this gradual but inevitable acceptance of rock music and rock culture in Ukraine. Ukrainian-language rock began in October 1987 when the group V.V, began to sing Ukrainian-language lyrics. Glasnost has allowed rock music groups and culture to develop in Ukraine.
