ABSTRACT

This chapter offers views concerning the present structure of the Romanian society, conflicts between different political forces, and changes within each political institution. The presence of the Red Army and of the KGB in Romania, facilitated the installation and rapid growth of the Securitate. When the Soviet tanks left Romania, the Securitate was so powerful that it was able to control and oppress the people for three and a half more decades. The National Salvation Front, and in particular, President Iliescu and ex-Prime Minister Roman, tried vainly to disguise their real intentions. The duplicity of President Iliescu and former Prime Minister Roman is obvious in any foreign policy contact. After the 1989 revolution, many European countries have proved their solidarity with the fight and struggle of Romanians to resume their place among the free nations of the world.
