ABSTRACT

The question of anti-submarine warfare is a vital one for NATO and the best brains on both sides of the Atlantic are hard at work on the problem with the Soviets in possession of over 300 submarines. In World War II most submarines were found because sooner or later they had to expose themselves above water, either to attack, or to charge their batteries, or to transmit on their radio. Helicopters are often used nowadays instead of a ship on an anti-submarine screen. They lower their transducers, carry out a sonar search whilst hovering, raise the transducer, proceed to a new position and repeat the performance. Smaller helicopters are used for anti-submarine work, flying from frigates or destroyers, but they merely carry the weapon and are not capable themselves of detecting submarines.
