ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the central aspects of writing and submitting journal articles. It aims to help authors determine what a publishable idea is and how to enhance an article's chances of publication. A common error of beginning scholars, especially if they are trying to develop publishable articles from a complex dissertation, is to try and include all of the results and all of the points in one article. Journal editors naturally want to publish articles that will bring the journal attention and acclaim initially and citations to the journal for years to come. Although some academic researchers find the concept of "marketing" an article to a journal to be offensive, most experienced publishers in a specific field have developed those skills without necessarily explicitly acknowledging them. Young scholars frequently handicap themselves by sending articles only to the most prestigious general or specialized journals in their fields.
