ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the question of what the expectations of the Party were and whether economic arguments played a role in the decision to collectivize. It outlines the situation during the 1930s by discussing the use made of the kolkhoz labor force and considers the outcome of collectivization in regard to the social, political and economic aims. Concerning the use of labor within the kolkhozes the available data reveal some interesting facts. The displacement of men from agricultural production to administrative and service work was also due to the kolkhoz system. Only young men had the chance to leave the kolkhozes for industry, others were lucky if they found a job outside the kolkhoz in the villages.
