ABSTRACT

On November 3, 1986, nearly 200 Serbs and Montenegrins from the Kosovo district of Pristina, primarily from the village of Plementine, appeared before four high-ranking officials at the Federal Assembly in Belgrade to protest against the worsening situation in Kosovo. The villagers told the officials that "we will fight for justice even if it means bloodshed." This was the third time in 1986 that Serbs and Montenegrins from Kosovo had gone to Belgrade to vent their frustrations. On February 26 about 100 farmers told officials in Belgrade: "Either we live united in Kosovo, or we will move out." On June 20 police in Kosovo forcibly halted a massive migration effort by Serbs and Montenegrins in the town of Kosovo Polje. The growing exodus of the non-Albanian minority forced officials in Belgrade to take a more serious view of the situation in Kosovo.
