ABSTRACT

In the context of rapid structural change that took place in Brazil from 1968-1980, the transformation of employment patterns by job sector was especially significant in social terms. The extent to which the pattern of industrialization and of economic development affects the structure of employment is reflected in the distribution of chances for social mobility in Brazil. Also important in the overall modifications in the structure of employment was the evolving administrative and scientific-technical component. Routine bureaucratic occupations and scientific and technical occupations grew rapidly as well, more than doubling their proportional share between 1960 and 1980. In other words, more than one third of the individuals experienced a process of occupational mobility that originated in changes in the economic and demographic structure in Brazilian society. The relationship between the growth of the economically active population and the total population changed dramatically.
