ABSTRACT

A brief history of the international agricultural research centers is presented, noting how emphasis shifted, from the 1950s thorugh the 1960s, from extension services to research, basically as a result of the first provable yield increases and methods of disease prevention-the famous “green revolution.” An attempt is made to chart the future of agricultural research centers, taking into account the role of the Consultative Group for Intemation-al Agriculture Research (CGIAR), formed in 1971. The need for coordination between the centers and individual national policy makers and priorities is stressed.
