ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the detailed description of Loma San Gabriel material culture, a reevaluation of extant data, description of inter- and intrasite settlement patterns, the development of a cultural chronology, and a synthesis of Loma San Gabriel culture history. Loma San Gabriel sites are generally located within the Foothill and lower elevations of the Highland zones of the eastern foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Zacatecas and Durango. The Loma San Gabriel material culture is rather simple in nature with no specialization in production represented by any category of material. The archaeological use of gourds in the Mesa del Norte has been documented and the lack of bowls, plates and ladles in the ceramic assemblage of the Loma San Gabriel culture may be explained by the use of gourds for such items. Loma Concave Base may be related to other concave base types throughout northern Mexico and the American southwest.
