ABSTRACT

Singapore is a multi-ethnic island ministate of 237 square miles located off the southern tip of the Malay peninsula. The population of 2,413,900 is predominately Chinese with smaller Malay and Indian communities. 1 Within Southeast Asia, Singapore is unique not only in size, but also in standard of living. In 1983 the island’s per capita GNP was almost four times that of Malaysia and twelve times that of Indonesia. 2 In economic terms the state of Singapore is an unqualified success, and far ahead of its Southeast Asian neighbors.
