ABSTRACT
Japan has a long, illustrious military tradition of “such antiquity that it surely precedes history.” 1 While military tradition is long, Japan’s experience with national military forces is proportionately quite short, but not absolutely so in comparison with the armed forces of most other Asian countries. This chapter is concerned with Japan’s contemporary armed forces but the historical development of Japan’s armed forces as an institution must include two separate processes of development.
