ABSTRACT

The Austrian party system, in the consolidated form it showed toward the end of the 19th century and which it retained with only minor changes up to the last third of the 20th century, is characterized by the formation of only a few significant parties. In 19th and 20th century Europe 10 lines of conflict can be recognized which had a significant influence on the development of parties. Of those only a few had a party-founding effect in Austria. 1
