ABSTRACT

The good agent has an eye on every aspect of the publishing process and follows each author's work down the production trail to the bookstore. Most often, an agent will draw up a simple contract, outlining the duties of said agent and the term of contract, giving the agent exclusive right to sell, or attempt to sell, that writer's work. A day in the life of the literary agent might offer editor some insight into what the profession is like. There are several different kinds of agents in the business today. An agent is in business to make money also, of course. Editors have to assess they client list so that, although it may range from the most literary avant garde to the most exciting nonfiction, it also includes commercial novels.
