ABSTRACT

The Non-Aligned Movement evolved as essentially a political forum and its major objective in its early stages was to create an international political framework conducive to the peaceful development of Third World countries without the complexities of power-bloc confrontations. On the economic side, the most interesting development within the NAM can be classified into four distinct patterns - all of which directly assist the NAM to organize itself for New International Economic Order (NIEO) negotiations. These include: The Co-ordinator Country arrangement; The Ad hoc Expert Group system; Sectoral institutionalization; and Central institutional systems. The designation of sectors could be much improved with a view to a comprehensive coverage of the key issues both in terms of NIEO and economic co-operation among developing countries. The absence of a permanent secretariat for the Non-Aligned countries stimulates the creation of ad hoc mechanisms to pursue their objectives.
