ABSTRACT

Motor vehicle injuries rank third among unintentional injuries reported to the Ministry of Health (MOH). This lower ranking is unusual, even for a developing country. Animal Bites type of injury is not often included in the injury literature, which makes its ranking as the number one reported unintentional injury in Ethiopia all the more interesting. Intentional injuries account for 33% of the injuries reported by the MOH. Ethiopia is in the early stages of industrial development, and health-related data from industrial sites are obtainable only from a limited number of government-owned industries and from a few independent, cross-sectional surveys. The Ministry of Industry, which was created in 1975, after the nationalization of all major industries in Ethiopia, collects nonspecific injury/illness data on approximately 80,000 workers. Ethiopia continues to endure a high prevalence of communicable diseases which will continue to represent priority health problems.
