ABSTRACT

The rapid economic development of the Pacific Basin is also characterized by growing interdependence among the countries of the region. The Pacific region contains five of the six most populous countries in the world — China, the Soviet Onion, the United States, Indonesia, and Japan. The economic performance of the Pacific nations has been most impressive. A large number of the countries in the region have consistently recorded a very high rate of growth. The rise of the Pacific Ocean as the stage or arena of high politics and the economic development and the growing interdependence among the countries of the Pacific Basin rest, inter alia, on the development of technology, especially ocean transport technology. Progress on the Pacific Community concept is tied up with the climate of peace in the region and with world at large. The debate and dialogue on a Pacific Community should continue at different levels and in varied forums.
