ABSTRACT
It is my belief that the central issue in the teaching of the social studies is the "fact-value" issue—the. relation of social knowledge to belief. Socrates stated this same issue as the relation of knowledge to virtue. But Socrates held that knowledge is virtue, a position which I cannot accept. That knowledge may be an aid to man's being virtuous, I would readily accept.
