ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the general trends of economic evolution in Latin America. It also discusses the dependent developmentalist approaches to Latin American industrialization as well as the renewal of current theoretical debates. The book aims to identify some of the elements in the crisis of the Latin American industrial sector and looks for relevant guidelines for designing new industrial-sector policies. It examines the financial liberalization reforms implemented in the Southern Cone countries and suggests factors to be taken into account in order to avoid the serious disadvantages of policies. The book analyzes the long-term effects of structural adjustment reforms, focusing on the relationships among external opening, export promotion, and foreign trade liberalization. It also examines the existing problems and interrelations between the conditionality of multilateral institutions and the strategy based on adjustment with growth.
