ABSTRACT

Contemporaneous populations use graphics for magical ceremonies, in particular for hunting rituals such as those of the Australian aborigines or-the African Bushmen. Immobility, characteristic moment, or suggestive moment, are all defined by a single animal. It would seem that a single figure was made for a precise intention, usually assumed to refer to hunting magic. A new stage of great importance has been reached when the prehistoric artist deliberately grouped several animals, with a precise, meaningful intention. The grouping of animals, as for example, the group of small deer, opens the way to another important discovery. The panel represents a combat of two bison. The one facing right, powerful, sure of himself, economical in his movements, drives the other, maddened, beast to the edge of the cliff and, despite its desperate efforts, with a violent thrust of his horns, sends it rolling into the abyss.
