ABSTRACT

Throughout 1992 Syria continued to pursue three central force-building processes that commenced with the outbreak of the Gulf Crisis in 1990: strengthening its armor forces, enhancing the overall qualitative dimension of its ground forces, and building a long-range attack arm. In this chapter we shall present and analyze these processes, assess the capabilities of the Syrian Armed Forces, and look at the role of “strategic parity” in light of Syria’s participation in the peace process.
