ABSTRACT

Official Name of State: Republic of Yemen. On May 22, 1990, YAR and PDRY proclaimed their formal unification as one state. “Unity day” was Nov. 30, 1990. A transition period ensued. Merger of the armed forces was not accomplished. Difficulties between the two former Yemen states became acute in 1994, and led to civil war in May 1994 between former YAR and former PDRY troops. In July 1994 northern troops consolidated their victory over the South, and reunited the country by force. For forces of former PDRY and YAR, see Middle East Military Balance 1989–90.
