ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the Intifada during a year of significant alterations in the main features of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict-a year that witnessed a dramatic transformation of the environment for Palestinian violence. It focuses on the armed struggle perpetrated by activists identified with both the nationalist and the religious camps, and on Israeli counter-terrorism policy and conduct. Also surveyed are developments within the context of competition between the PLO mainstream and Hamas for the leadership of the Palestinian national movement, and the reaction of Hamas to the political breakthrough.
