ABSTRACT

The Chinese people's reform of their economic and political structures to realize the goal of socialist modernization has been going on for years. China's long history has provided it with a time-honored and deep-rooted traditional culture. It is a cohesive force promoting national unity and a harmony of interests among China's many nationalities, and it is an inertial force that tends to restore ancient ways and hinder social reforms. Traditional Chinese culture existed for thousands of years before it faced its first real challenges when colonialism opened the doors of China to the outside world in the middle of the last century. The general feature of the new culture is socialist; its epochal characteristics are suited to the needs of modernization; and its national characteristics are distinctively Chinese. During the process of building a new socialist culture, it is imperative to give full play to the guiding role of Marxism.
