ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on visual thinking strategies (VTS). VTS draws its theoretical underpinnings from cognitive developmental psychology, most notably Vygotsky with his emphasis on speech as a precursor to thought. VTS offers educators a powerful tool in the learning process because the strategy can be applied to a broad range of learning objectives. In a widely cited, influential revision of Bloom’s taxonomy of reasoning skills. VTS is an important method that can lead to valuable observations, insights, and exchanges appropriate for the sport psychology classroom. Facilitating VTS emphasizes students working on their own discoveries and relegates typical instructor’s duties such as correcting errors or providing information to the background. VTS is a well-researched and valuable technique for instructors who are interested in fostering deeper thinking about images and course content than traditional lecture. The technique is grounded in theory, flexible, and novel and provides a new and different way to effectively teach and learn.
