ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a teaching case approach to deeply engage students of sport and exercise psychology in course content and develop critical thinking and evaluation skills. A teaching case is a story. It is as real as possible with all the peculiarities and ambiguities of a real-life set of events confronting sport and exercise psychology practitioners. The chapter discusses the role of the instructor. It provides guidance showing how to assess a teaching case as part of a course of learning. The chapter discusses classroom assessment techniques quantifying student learning and engagement. Ground rules set expectations for how discussions will occur and the expected behaviors during the process from all those participating in the learning process. The chapter provides a brief list of recommendations for creation, testing and learning how to instruct using teaching cases. It concludes with a brief list of references and resources to help instructors develop teaching cases for their courses.
