ABSTRACT

It is undeniable that how well a language fares on the Internet is a good predictor of the future of such a language. The Internet presence of a people's language is also a strong means of preserving and making their language and culture relevant beyond the twenty-first century. The economic benefits of such a vantage linguistic position are immense. That Google deems it worthwhile to provide facilities for Internet search in Yoruba language would thus be a welcome development to advocates of extensive use of the language at home and in the diaspora. The chapter explores the translation efforts needed in order to so as to use this medium to propagate and perpetuate the Yoruba language and cultural heritage. The discus shows the low awareness rate and overall general disinterestedness in the Yoruba-medium search engine. This as the chapter indicates demonstrates an extremely poor rate of utilization of the resource. Finally, the chapter offers some plausible recommendations as solutions in addressing the challenges.
