ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book examines the United States’ security perspectives in the Asia-Pacific and the value of its alliance with Australia. It assesses the security threats and challenges to Australia, and is authored by Andrew T. H. Tan. As a middle power, Australia’s security and the future challenges that it faces are linked to developments in both its regional and global environments. The book examines the common interests that bind the United States and Australia, and is written by Bates Gill, one of America’s leading experts on China. It discusses the evolution of the US-Australia strategic relationship. This relationship has evolved from more or less an adversarial position in the 19th century to an Australia largely dependent on the US during the Cold War to the interdependent partnership seen today. The book examines the future of Australia-US strategic and defence cooperation from an Australian perspective.
