ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the intentions and practical considerations relating to the first contact with participants, as they are assessed and orientated to an MBP course. In this chapter, the assessment process refers to assessing a participant's suitability for the course, and orientation refers to information the people give participants. There are important overarching principles to consider during assessment and orientation. There is a growing evidence base showing that mindfulness training can been helpful for participants with learning disabilities. Thus, it is important to talk this over in the pre-course interview or orientation. The range of possible ways to assess and orientate participants is briefly described below-beginning with the most thorough approach, to lighter touch options. For many would-be participants the assessment process and/or orientation will be their first contact with mindfulness and a mindfulness community. Comprehensive information about the content and rationales of pre-course assessment and orientation may also be found in the various curriculum guides.
