ABSTRACT

Sharing pre-recorded courses, or videos of practices may be useful in certain contexts, but this is not what is addressed. If conducting an orientation in a group rather than individually, the session may include building connection between participants as well as with the teacher(s). An extra safety net is provided by reminding all participants that they have the option to contact the teacher ('the host') from the breakout rooms using the 'chat' function, and that they can leave the breakout room at any point to return to the main 'room'. At the assessment, check participants’ internet connection, to ensure they have adequate bandwidth for the video function, and their ability to use the digital platform. Online groups who have met physically – even just once – usually have a natural entry to connection and empathy with each other. More time and attention is needed to build empathy and connection in the online space.
